Found Art Tuesday 5-22-07: MOON

My idea for this piece started with another found art participant. Maybe some of you know of the Granola Poet. If you go to the link listed here you will find a poem about me! My husband can't live with me anymore because of the size of my head! LOL:

So I wanted to dedicate a little diddy to the famous Granola Poet. Now granted I am no poet...but that is what I love about the found art movement...It empowers me to try things I normally would not do. Hence the poem about the moon. This little piece is entitle Old Man Moon. The art is just so so. I really just wanted a vehicle for the poem (nice excuse eh)? I used a scrap of water color paper, water colors, acrylics, wax pencil and oil pastels. I actually scritched (is that a word?) the poem on the moons surface. My extra fine black sharpie died when I tried to write the first word. I actually like the scritching. So I guess I meant to do it! In case you can't read the poem, it is typed below. How fun this was!

OLD MAN MOON

Old man moon sleeps all day, then at night comes out to play.

He shines his light for all to see, a guided path for a safe journey.

Soon darkness wanes, he yawns and sighs.

It's time for bed, he says goodbye.

He will return of that be sure,

Shining for his nightly tour.

Solo exhibit wrap-up

Well my first solo exhibit is over. I took down the art on the 10th of this month. I was totally humbled by the entire process. But I did get through it. I sold 5 pieces (one was a commissioned piece) and was able to donate 20% of those sales to Greyhounds Only http://www.greyhoundsonly.com/. I did make a few contacts and I am going to participate in Gallery in the Garden..which is an annual art show in the beautiful gardens of the an artist residing in Woodstock IL http://www.galleryinthegarden.org/. This even takes place in July. Unfortunately or fortunately depending upon how you look at it, my children have a ballet recital on the same day but the artist who hosts the show, Deb Glaubke, said it would be no problem if I left early. How cool is that! I decided I would complete at least 4 new works for this show. I will include maybe 6 of the works from the Conscious Cup solo exhibit.

I will leave you with a work from my first solo exhibit. It did not sell but it is one of my favorites. I created the work after seeing the film "An Inconvenient Truth." Whatever you might think of former Vice-Presidents Gores politics, you have got to admire his persistence. I was so moved by this film and the powerful message behind it, that I created a work based upon my emotions. As a scientist I have no problem with his data. I even did a little research myself because I thought that the way the data was presented was primarily for a non-scientific public. The work is dedicated to his efforts to educate the public and it sells for $95.00 framed. The final size of the work is 16 by 20 and it is a mixed media and collage piece on watercolor paper. The title of this piece is: She Weeps for Us. Take a close look at the Earth, I think Mother Earth would nod in agreement.

Found Art Tuesday 5-15-07: LOST

Have you ever been crazy in love, or really lost in love.... That sentiment is how I interpret the theme this week. I have been lucky in love in that I can say I have been lost in love twice in my life. Once with someone long before my husband and I were serious and of course I am lost in love with my husband.

While working on a special scrapbook for my daughter Kaitie (for her 8th grade year), I quickly made this little ATC. IT was very quick because I had the background done already in a stash of my stuff. This is a mixed media piece I call Lost in Love. Acrylics, inks, found papers and stickers were used. My studio time will be limited for a while because I need to finish the scrapbook and get graduation invites made. I guess I will be busy!

I have finished a couple new pieces but they are studies for larger works. I just wish there were 36 hours in a day!

Found Art Tuesday 5-8-07: Mother

Mother as a topic made me reminisce about my childhood and all that I loved about my mother. That led to thoughts a bit deeper. Am I a good Mother? Who is my idea of a perfect mother. That is when I thought of the Mother of Jesus. Being Catholic, we were brought up with a statue of Mary in our home. we crowned her every May and prayed the rosary daily (well maybe once a week). Her image seemed to be everywhere. We thought of Mary as our Mother, the ultimate Mother. And so the Madre de Todos was conceived in my very messy studio at 2:10 PM today. This is a transfer from a religious calendar and the work is mixed media, watercolor and acrylics, on watercolor paper. It is about 4 by 9 inches in size.

I am going to leave this at my children's school. IT is a Catholic school and I know there are plenty of teachers who will love this.
I am secretly hoping that whoever finds this does indeed hit my blog!

Found Art Tuesday 5-1-07: Water

I actually finished this piece on Sunday. I wanted my husband to take it with him today. There was a huge Outsider and Raw art show at the Merchandise Mart in downtown Chicago and I wanted him to leave it there at one of the gallery booths. Marc actually went to the show on Friday and he said it was absolutely awe-inspiring. With a gazillion galleries representing an equal number of artists, there was plenty of eye candy. Perhaps his most humbling moment was meeting Phylis Kind. She is the New York gallery owner who put together a retrospective of Martin Ramirez's work. It is traveling the country now and we plan on viewing the show in October at the Museum of Art in Milwaukee WI. Marc talked to her about this great artist quite unknown until just recently. I think he was in art heaven. And where was I? Working and shuffling kids to and from dance classes.

With water as a theme, I immediately knew that I wanted to try my drawing hand once again and create a mermaid. The ocean was made with a slew of scraps that were laying on my work bench.
I drew the mermaid on a separate piece of paper and then she became part of the collage. The substrate was a drink coaster from Chili's. She is kind of looking at a ship wondering what it is really like up there. I entitled the piece "From the Depths." I wonder where Marc will leave her....

Found Art Tuesday 4-24-07: TOY

What a day I had yesterday. While I did finish my found art piece, there was no time to blog it. My beautiful 14 year old daughter was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. This event pretty much was an all evening affair. I was the only Mom who balled like a baby as I congratulated her in front of an audience of class mates and parents. She was so embarrassed and did not understand my emotion even though I tried to explain it to her. You see, Kaitie has a reading disability. She is under the dyslexic umbrella. She and I worked so hard every single night for eight fricking years. Countless essays, tests to study for, books to read, assignments to do, projects to finish...I just about thought it was for naught. And now here she is, ready to graduate eighth grade, a top student. I think any Mom in my position would have done the same thing. I am so proud of her. I guess I have been pretty hard on her all these years...because I know she is capable of brilliance. But when you hate to read, I mean absolutely hate to read..well that does not get you very far in any world. So I rode her, and spoon fed her , and taught her how to memorize. We have been at each others throats for years. I guess this is sweet vindication! She can do it is she wants too, painful as it may be, she can do it.

So on to my found art piece. When I was small I would play with a variety of dolls. Barbie, baby dolls (Chatty Kathy, Thumbalina to name a few). The other thing I did was art. I had a big supply of color and paint by number sets, pastels, Crayolas, clay, and coloring books. My Dad loved to sculpt and paint. IT was one of his hobbies and I would sit with him and do my art. What I loved about my Father is that he encouraged this kind of "play." There were few rules (except clean up after or Mom will get you). When I sat down to compose a found art piece I wanted to combine the two, dolls and art. I can't sew..and regardless, to make an Art doll is out of my league. But I did have some polymer clay and so I fashioned a pin out of the clay. It is a Diva of sorts. She is painted with Lumiere paints and is enhanced with tiny beads and artistic wire.

I think I will leave this at a restaurant this Saturday.

Found Art Tuesday 4-17-07 : Travel

With the theme of travel, I immediately thought of all the places I would like to go in the world. I love to travel. It is just since we have a family, it has become prohibitive. So one of the first places I want to go after the kids are in college, is France. It is all about the art, the wine, the history, and the cheese :) Oh I wish I could go and just wander through the galleries and museums, sip wine at some quaint cafe....You get the picture. So when I sat down to create a piece about France...I came across in my pile of stuff, a piece that I had duplicated for a swap about a year ago. It is an original work, collage, about the size of a postcard. The piece is entitled: Travel France (duh). Someday........

I decided to use this as my found art work this week even though it was made about a year ago. Today is my twins birthday and my time has been very limited these past two or three days. Oh and from my little solo show I have a commission that is taking up brain space! I wish there were more than 24 hours in a day!

Found Art Tuesday 4-10-07: Connections

The connections theme at first seemed difficult. With so much cluttering my brain as of late, I could not get my arms around the topic. Sitting at my artists reception I had plenty of time to work out the theme. And what I thought about is sort of the bigger picture. We are all connected through Earth. IT does not matter what country we live in, or what we do for a living, or what color our skin is. We are the World. And that is my title. So to depict this kind of connection, I cut out paper dolls from a map. We can be linked today through the technologies of cell phones and computers so those are included as well. All we have to do is reach out. This was a simple straightforward collage done on watercolor paper. The paper dolls lend themselves to a book mark format.

Artist Recption 4-7-07

Today was my day, my very first artist reception. The owners of Conscious Cup were waiting for me when I arrived. I was somewhat overwhelmed by their "accolades." Mike really likes my work and is already talking about another show later in the year! My art has only been hanging for a day and a half! Anyway, it was rather quiet for the first hour and then my friends began to arrive. I so enjoyed explaining how each piece was "born." My 14 year old, Kaitie, told her teacher about this and I was so pleased to see Mrs. Gavula at my reception. She bought two pieces! I almost died. She purchased the ones you see here called "Heralds of Spring" and the smaller piece that I did in Dec. of 2005 called "Innocence Prevails." The store owner is considering purchasing a piece as well. Gosh I really was flabbergasted. I did not know what to say or how to react. My husband was there with my three children and the look on their faces was priceless. What I have decided to do for each piece sold is to write up a little explanation of my thought process behind the work and describe the materials used. I will sign and date that as a sort of certificate of authenticity.

For the Heralds of Spring, I was practicing drawing these fantastical faces and it was late in February, rather cold and dreary. I was wishing it was Spring and about 30 degrees warmer. The piece just sort of came together. This is a mixed media and collage piece after of the style of Misty Mawn. I love her whimsical works. Mine definitely pale in comparison. But at least I am attempting to draw again! Acrylics, oil pastels, inks, rubber stamps found papers and objects were used to create the work on 300 lb watercolor paper. The work is 11 by 14 framed.

The Innocence Prevails piece was actually one in a series of 4. The other three were sold through Ebay in the Art Squared listings. This work is 6 by 6 in size and is primarily watercolor and inks done on watercolor paper. This piece was done right before Christmas in 2005 and came into being because I was thinking of my religious roots. Through so much adversitiy, Mary still managed to give birth to Jesus, a true miracle.

Conscious Cup Gallery Show. 4-5-07

Last night I hung my 13 works at the Conscious Cup Roastery and Cafe in Crystal Lake, IL. I am nervous, the excited kind of nervous. I have to say this has been quite a learning curve and I definitely learned some of my limitations! Rosa Murillo was kind enough to answer some of my numerous questions about how to go about a gallery show. She also supplied me with an excellent resource: http://artistemerging.blogspot.com/ , chocked full of info for the emerging artist. I am so grateful for such a site. But after immersing myself in the information there, I felt quite overwhelmed. I guess that is normal for being a newbie at all this. So I decided to wing it, at least for this gallery show.

When I was contacted by the owner of the cafe, I knew I had to seize this opportunity. It has been my experience that in my little corner of the world, mixed media and collage is a bit of an oddity. I think it is time for the public to get a taste of this art form. The galleries here are chocked full of very traditional works, quite nice, but traditional none the less. You will also see some abstract paintings, some assemblage, a little collage, and some outrageous oils (which I am totally not a fan of). I wanted to create some new work but where to begin..... I thought long and hard about what would sell in our area, trying to figure out the market so to speak. Well, that was a waste of brain cells! When it comes down to it...I do not have to feed my family from the income of art sales. Thank God I can create art that means something to me. You can drive yourself crazy if you try to approach creating new pieces from a good marketing perspective. I thought about how I buy art. The pieces that I just had to bring home either reminded me of a special area of the country or invoked strong emotions in me. Art is so individual... My new pieces are for the most part, issues that really touch me both on an conscious and unconscious level. Some of the pieces are very light, as you will see.

My husband helped me hang the pieces. I was pleased with the outcome. Let me say one word about framing though...this is NOT my forte. I simply do not have the tools. I discovered that I can't cut a straight line even with a t ruler and square. I don't have a matte cutter so I had to purchase pre-cut mattes. Then the frames I purchased had to be standard size and so with coupons and 50% sales, I purchased black frames from Michael's. The work I created had to fit the frames so there were those limitations even before I began to work. Even with premade frames it took a long time to set the work in them because I can't cut a straight line! I do have a "chopper" paper cutter but that is totally inadequate for large sheets of paper not to mention is is just for paper. It would be nice to sell a few pieces so I could pay for the frames...and while I am dreaming, how about an extra $3-400 for a matte cutter! Anyway we did get them on the wall and while not perfectly at eye level, they looked fine up there.

While we were hanging the works, I noticed a group of folks in the back of the cafe. There were maybe 10 people all huddled around a computer screen. Well it turned out that they were some kind of art group meeting to discuss current work. Talk about intimidation. I did not have the nerve to talk to them.

The work seen here is 7 by 7 and entitled "John." It is a lighter piece, mixed media and collage on watercolor paper. I had this terrific old photo of an Italian relative. The picture is circa 1940s. I can't remember his name, but he was related to my Father. So I wanted to build a simple work around him. Sure enough I found this headline from a vintage magazine and then the work just came together. John has one of those looks that is really hard to read. Is he smirking because he knows something that we don't, is he just happy, or is this a more sinister look (mafioso). Now mind you, I don't think my family was tied to that organization but I can imagine!

Found Art Tuesday- 4/3/07: Green

Green has always evoked strong feelings of Spring and rebirth for me. In the past when using green as a theme, I indeed used floral motifs in the work. But this time I kept thinking about envy and the saying "green with envy." This little shipping tag is what came out of my head. In general, women wish they had more diamonds or bigger diamonds than their friends. Diamonds are sometimes a status symbol. So I thought that a hand dangling a diamond in front of many eyes would cover the envy feeling. If envy has a color, green indeed works!

Found Art Tuesday 3-27-07: Birds

I kept thinking of Escher's work, the famous painting of the morphing birds...So then I went to bed and dreamt of the Wright Brothers. Hence the work: Final Draft 1903. Man has had some kind of "flight" machine on his drawing board over the centuries. Even the ancient Greeks sent Icarus on his own personal flight, although that was a disaster. I imagined the Wright Brothers and many before them, studied the dyamics of flight via the bird. And look where we are today.

The piece is about 4 by 5 and is a collage on cardboard. How is this for being bold...my family and I are headed to the Art Institute in Chicago today to view an exhibit of paintings from a gallery in Paris. There will be a sleu of impressionist works represented there. Anyway I thought I would leave this at the Information center. HEHEHEHe. Should be fun!

Found Art Tuesday: Passion 3-20-07

These past weeks I have been trying to make the most of my time in my studio getting ready for this upcoming show (April 5th -May 10th). I have been so focused on the work at hand that I have not had a real presence of mind for much else. With that said...most of my found art efforts have been small, rather straight forward pieces, this week included. ATC's , small post card size works, or book marks are about all the creativity I can muster right now. Yet, I do want to keep creating for this project because I believe in it. This week I so wanted to do an altoid tin shrine but time was not kind to me. So an ATC was about all that I could manage.

Passion...I am half Italian, passion flows in my blood. I have a lot of passions. Husband, kids, my hounds, animal communication, art, music, good wine, good coffee, etc.... to be honest with you, my passions did not come to mind when I first thought about this weeks topic. Rather, what I thought about was what would totally embody that word..Passion. So the people, the culture of Mexico came to mind. I love the flamboyant colors, rich traditions, and cultural heritage found in Mexico. The dances and celebrations are done with a passion not often experienced by the average person. The strong faith exhibited at shrines..pretty amazing. The Ballet Folklorico..you have to see and experience it to understand what passion is all about. Yes...Mexico could be included in the defition of Passion without a doubt.

My little ATC is a mixed media collage using acrylics, inks, rubber stamps, found papers, all done on watercolor paper. It includes an image of the Virgin de Guadalupe (she has a rather huge fan club in Mexico)...and a silly skeleton representing The Day of the Dead celebration.

Granted, I am just a gringo but every time I visit Mexico I feel so alive and invigorated. My art also comes alive. Geesh...now I need a vacation!

Getting out There!

I made that conscious decision to stick my neck out or should I say my Art out there. This came about in February when the owner of Conscious Cup Roastery and Cafe found my found art piece. He contacted me through my blog and currently I am preparing for that show. I have 4 almost 5 new works ready in addition to some other work I had been "saving." With that decision made, I decided to enter the second annual county wide art project for McHenry County. This is in conjunction with our library system, YMCA, and Northwest area arts council. The Involvement Advocacy of McHenry County started this initiative www.involvementadvocacy.org. The theme this year is Outside my Window. I finished my work and I am dropping it off today.

This is a mixed media piece, very light hearted, called "Take Flight." It is done on a gallery canvas 10 by 10 inches in size. The background of the work used rinse aid and alcohol (rubbing alcohol) as described in Claudine Hellmuth's book. The effect is exactly what I was looking for! In this work I used some of my drawings. I think it was about a year ago, in some magazine (I don't remember whcih one) that there was a spread done by an artist who used these fantastical people in her work. She drew everything but said clip art or collage clips would work just as well if you do not want to draw the faces and body. I remember she outlined her work in black. That just sort of stuck with me and so I decided to give it all a try. I really think, for the lightness of the work, that it worked OK. I guess I have given myself permission to draw as long as it is more fantasy and does not have to look like Andrew Wyeth's work. HA as if that could ever happen! Acrylics, masking tape, found papers and objects/stickers were used. My scanner is not quite 10 inches wide so some of the work is not shown...but it is mostly background.

The work will be on display all over the county in a sort of traveling show. Then there is a huge artist reception in May. Should be fun! I hope the work will bring a smile to the faces of those that view it.

Found Art Tues 3-13-07: Obsession

So what I am obsessed with? The first thing that came to mind was my weight. But that is another story. See if you can find my obsession of the moment in my found art piece. If you can't find it..the title of my piece will give it away.

I started to think of some of my favorite artists and do you think they were obsessed? I would say so...so much so that I bet if I were to list a dozen artists, you could rattle off their obsessions. How about Vermeer with those pearls and his very veiled feelings. Or Rivera with Frida or Frida with Diego and death, or Dali..well Dali is Dali, or Rembrant with his poorness. See what I mean. So hence the found art piece, "Greyhound." Yes that is my obsession. If I could I would have 20 more... These hounds are so in need of good homes. I have two and they eat healthier than I.

This work was done on a cardboard backing. The collage methods used were Talbot's. On the final acrylic wash, I dripped some alcohol as per Claudine Hellmuth's techniques. It is a little hard to see with this scan but it did turn out kind of neat. I just finished another collage for a traveling exhibit in McHenry County. I used this alcohol technique with dramatic results. I have to varnish it and then I will scan it.

Found Art Tues: Beauty 3-6-07

I think that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In this beholder's eye, I find beauty all around me...in nature, art, architecture, music, dance, a hydrogen molecule, a bacterial spore...you get the picture. But today I was thinking of my three children. They dance and soon will be in a spring production of the Sleeping Beauty. So then I started to think of how I cry, every time I see them on stage. The beauty of their movements, the grace, and determination, there is nothing like it for me. So I decided that my piece would be something to do with dance...a ballerina.

My found art piece is 5 by 5 inches and is a mixed media work. It is entitled Dance for Kaitie. I used some of Claudine Hellmuth's techniques including the infamous Vaseline resist.

Found Art Tuesday: 2-27-07: PEACE

This topic is very timely for me as I am reading a book by one of my favorite inspirational speakers/writers: Matthew Kelly http://www.matthewkelly.org/. His latest book has made me realize that I have a lot of personal house cleaning to do. I especially loved his discussion on achieving an inner peace. One way that Matthew works toward this goal (of inner peace) is by entering the "class room of silence " daily. Take 15 minutes a day to listen in quite to your inner voice. Sit in a quite area, no music, T.V., kids, husband etc...just silence. By attending this lesson in silence, we can work through problems or decisions that need to be made because we can actually hear our inner voice. Fifteen minutes does not seem very long...but just try it for a week. I have challenged myself to do so!

It is no wonder that my piece is called "The Class Room of Silence." I created a sort of door hanger (like a do not disturb sign) that you can hang on your door during your 15 minutes. The work is a mixed media one using acrylics, inks, rubber stamps and hand drawn element (I seem to be a bit bolder with my drawing these days).

I plan on leaving it at hair salon tomorrow :) But maybe I will enlist my husband again to leave it in the big city.

Found Art Tuesday: Inspiration

Ah yes...just where does that ol inspiration come from? What is the process, where do the ideas come from.... I absorb a lot of ideas from other artists, both friends and the likes of Picasso, Schwitters, Talbot, Cornell, Kahlo. So those always tend to be in the back of my brain. When I need them, they are there. I will often go to bed at night with a glimmer of a thought on a particular piece. Then I will assemble it before I fall off to sleep and probably in my dreams as well. I just completed a work for the Conscious Cup gallery. My inspiration came out of my anger. A friend had just been diagnosed with breast cancer...stage III. At night, just prior to dosing off, I clearly saw what I wanted to do. Now mind you, it did not turn out exactly how I pictured it, but at least I had a good starting point.

My little ATC is called "I Dream." It works for me! This is a mixed media collage on watercolor paper. I then mounted it to a piece of glossy black card stock. I drew the sleeping me and the moon. Stars were punched out. I enjoyed putting this found art piece together as I was working on the piece I talked about above.

I will post those works for the gallery but I want to make a few more. I have a piece churning in my head now having to do with fair trade and coffee.

UPDATE:
I expanded my found art territory and enlisted an accomplice. Since last Sept. almost weekly I have been leaving a found art piece in my favorite watering holes, dentist office, orthodontist office, doctor offices, even church. I finally decided that I can't keep leaving the works in the same places. So I asked my husband to leave this ATC at his favorite watering hole in the big city of Chicago. The place: Intelligencia Coffee (another fair trade coffee shop). He left the work there on Friday (AM) in the sugar/napkin area and reported that it was gone by lunch. The loop area of Chicago is gianormous! Just think of the possibilities!

Found Art Tuesday 2-13-07: LOVE

Well my found art Tuesday will be a Wednesday this week. We are in the middle of a huge blizzard. I did not even take my kids to after school activities! The schools closed at 2 PM this afternoon. So I made a wooden pin, a sort of traditional valentine pin. I will leave it for someone on valentines day...seems appropriate. I used an ultra thick embossing powder to coat the heart and then just sprinkled in beads and heart confetti. The bauble was glued on.

Some good news...I did get an exhibit at The Conscious Cup coffee cafe for the beginning of April. I will be busy creating a few more pieces and we will see what happens from there. I am really excited about it. I just hope I can live up to the store owners expectations!

One of the last go arounds for ArtDecos

I am sad. One of the premier (in my opinion) deco groups, ArtDecos, is coming to an end. Our list owner has a fledgling new business and she has plenty of other yahoo groups to look after. It has been a wonderful journey. This group had some of the best mixed media artists around participating in traditional deco swaps. The owner kept the group by invitation only and we kept the decos within the group. The art was spectacular. When I joined, I was a deco newbie and very new to mixed media/collage. But by having my hands on these little gems, I quickly learned something about compositon, style, color, and technique. I really grew as an artist. So I am very grateful that I was part of this wonderful group of talented women. Here is one page from a deco booklet that I just sent out. The theme was travel and I chose spy capitols! I really like this page...

Found Art Tues. 2-6-07: Superhero

The topic of Superhero is just perfect for us Moms. Old Moms, new Moms, International Moms, you get the picture. When I think of what I juggle each day....I think we deserve the title of Superhero. Think about it...I am a retired research microbiologist but no amount of schooling could have prepared me for the grueling Mom schedule that I keep. I always have to be on. Get the kids dressed, fed and out the door to school, walk the dogs, clean-up the dishes, go to my part-time job, come home and walk the dogs, start to prep dinner, clean-up, pick the kids up from school, take them to after school activities, return home and walk the dogs, prepare dinner, feed the masses, feed the dogs, clean-up, help with home work, crash at 9:00 (after walking the dogs). Oh yea, then there is the wash, the laundry baskets are always full no matter how many washes I do. House cleaning you say...only when necessary! So that is my daily routine. Then there are all the volunteer things we do! Do I really do all that? I have not even begun. Do we get any thanks? Seldom for me.

OK so my little 3 1/2 by 5 work, titled Super Moms, is a tribute to mothers everywhere. My Mom is the woman on the left. She was my Superhero! The work is a mixed media collage on a heavy duty piece of scrap book paper and then I mounted it to cardboard. I want to thank my children for their homework papers :)

Found Art Tuesday 1-30-07: Music

With Music as a topic, I wanted to make a statement about how I feel about Jazz and one of Jazz's great innovators. Music throughout centuries has had certain sets of rule, if you will, to follow in terms of composition and performance. There were certain ways to do things or a convention with certain styles of music from baroque, classical, modern, even rock n roll. Every now and then a true innovator invents or reinvents a style, throwing convention to the wind, and releasing musical moment resulting in freedom. Jazz is that style and Duke Ellington is that innovator. If you have ever listened to his work, you can't help but feel like you are floating on air. Jazz in and of itself is a musical style that is free from convention but the Duke really made sure every one knew that.

Freedom is a mixed media piece using inks, acrylics and found papers. It is about 3 1/2 inches by 4.

Found Art Tuesday 1-23-07: ART

Art, a difficult topic believe it or not. How does one interpret? I was once asked to define the word Art as a sort of challenge. Jonathan Talbot suggested to me that it might be a good exercise. Well after about a full page dissertation, it came down to a little quote from my daughter which went something like "Mom, Art is something you make that you like." Mr. Talbot graciously shorten my definition from one page of typing to "Art is something you make." Deceptively simple I think.

I admire a variety of people "who make something." They include artists both living and dead. My new art friend, Rosa, is one of those people (living of course). Two of my favorite non-living artists are Paul Klee and Georgia O'Keefe. My little pin is a tribute to both. I took Rosa's lead from last week and decided on a three dimensional piece. I love to make domino pins, and so this little piece came about. The background is a transfer of a Klee painting and the silhouette is Georgia O'Keefe. I will attach the pin to this little card with some arty thoughts. I am not sure where to leave it yet :)

On another note. I am thrilled to say that I finally received a response from someone who found my found art piece from last week. I left "15 minutes" at a new coffee shop in Crystal Lake. Conscious Cup is a fair trade shop and the coffee is absolutely wonderful. In my neck of the woods...well lets just say the competitors don't come close. I really love the idea of fair trade and am only to happy to spend my dollars there, knowing that the product is superior and that more dollars wind up in the growers pocket. Anyway, the owner found the work and he left a message here. It was so nice that he acknowledged the work with a compliment. And as a complete surprise and bonus, I may just get a gallery show. I am really excited. I will meet him him on the 30th and we will see where this all goes. Meanwhile I am going to do some pieces with a coffee theme...and then maybe a few more with a theme of my choice.

Found Art Tuesday 1-16-07: FAME

Well, I actually finished this piece in 15 minutes. I decided to challenge myself and give myself a time limitation for this piece. The idea came to me almost instantaneously after learning what the theme was. I could not get the thought out of my head...that everybody wants their 15 minutes. The piece is a mixed media and includes inks, found papers, and rubber stamps. The main image, at the bottom of the page, was found as I was flipping through a magazine. She represents how fleeting fame really is. I call the piece "15 minutes," and will leave it at a local watering hole :)

Found Art Tuesday 1-9-07: Judgement

The topic this week is Judgement. All week long I could not get the final judgement out of my mind. So today I sat down to compose my version of the final judgement. I call the work "Finality." I kept seeing God's hand picking and choosing who He wants to bring home, hence the phone book and the fingers. Anyway the work is straight forward collage using J. Talbot's methods. I am not sure where I will leave it, but I am thinking at my daughters dance studio. There are a lot of artsy types there.

Happy New Year and Found Art Tuesday Topic.

When December began, I went incognito! My three children were once again in a charming, local production of the Nutcracker. We had rehearsals and more rehearsals, regular dance classes, and my oldest had yet other rehearsals going on for an appearance in Dance Chicago ( a huge celebration of the dance and is by invitation only). I honestly don't know where this month went. When all the performances were done, Christmas was knocking at our door. I had not even completed the Santa shopping. Gosh how I hate crowds! Then I had to do one of those power cleaning days to get my house ready for the onslaught. Today was the first day I had time to write.

I wrote to Rosa, when the December began, and told her that free time was a premium. I really did not do anything artistic except make a gift for Rosa and do a few hand done Christmas cards. Today, being the first found art Tuesday in 2007, I squeaked out this little ATC that I call "Healing Light." Rosa suggested a theme of newness or a new beginning, or something to do with a New Year. When I begin a new year, I often think of healing my emotional wounds from the previous year. I hope for white light from stars to heal my spirit. So I did a collage that included a lot of candles and stars. I often hope to become more innocent like a young child. I think I captured those feelings. The work itself is on matte board and I used a glue stick to affix the candles. Then I added a beautiful yellow embossing powder and heated. This created a great texture. The little girl looked very innocent and pure. She was added using matte soft gel medium. I also used some acrylic paints. I plan to leave this at my oldest daughter's orthodontist this Thursday.

Found Art Tues. Topic for 11-28-06

The Topic this week was Button. Tough topic, I thought, because my mind just wasn't that creative over the Thanksgiving Holiday. I found a red button that "spoke" to me. And here is the work, called "Redeye." It is in a bookmark format again. I used bits and pieces of papers that have been littering my workspace forever! Just cut them up and began to adhere them using Talbot's method. The bird was and drawn on a catalog page. Acrylic paints and media were also use to lend texture.

Since my 11 year old daughter has a dentist appt. tonight, I thought that would be a good place to leave the work. The reception area is large and it should be easy to leave it without getting caught!

Found Art Topic for 11-21-06

This past weekend, and Monday night, I was on homework duty..particularly studying for tests. I don't understand why teachers cram 7 or 8 tests into a short week for the kids. I mean that they have a 1/2 day on Wed but on Monday and Tues we had a boat loads of tests. My oldest was just loaded down and she is only in 8th grade. My twins are in 6th and had a major examine today and hours, I mean hours of home work! Gosh it is so ridiculous! NO one can succeed under those circumstances! I can't wait for the week before Christmas break! OK...off my soap box. I did manage to finish a work for found art Tuesday.

The topic this week was Cloud. My work is a mixed media piece done on a strip of watercolor paper about 2 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches. I used those artists tissue papers again to give shape and color to the sky. The cloud is Golden's tar gel and the image is something I found in a magazine ad. The piece is called "I can only Imagine." It is just about the right size for a bookmark. I am not sure where I will leave it yet...

Found Art Location for 11-14-06

I really loved Cancion por Espana and decided to keep the original. I do want to do another couple of 4 by4 squares on impressions from Spain... So what I decided to do was make a reprint of the work on a good quality photo paper. I affixed it to a piece of white cardstock and then left it at a Doctor's office in Lake Forest, Illinois. I had an annual exam and my Doctor is about an hour from my home so I thought I would expand the found art area a little :)

I will be very busy the next week or two with the holiday and quests (staying at our home). I don't know how much time I will have for art. But I do hope to at least turn out another Found Art piece for the Thanksgiving week.

Fount Art Topic for 11-14-06

SONG. Rosa described an exercise she did in one of her art classes where she listened to different kinds of music while paining to see how it influenced her work. She suggested that we listen to a song of our choice, playing it over and over again to try to get the essence of it. In other words, how it feels, what emotions come out, what color is it, what images come to mind etc.. . Well, I often listen to music when I do my art but I never consciously listened to it for inspiration. I thought this would be a good experiment to try. I even had an idea in mind as I was reading Rosa's journal. Naturally the idea did not pan out but it did lead to the work you see here.

I am going to digress here and talk about a piece of music that is on the Mission Impossible 2 music CD and I do not know the name nor composer of the piece. I heard it at the ballet school where my children dance. My 13 year old daughter danced to this piece (along with other members of her ballet class) in Dance Chicago. I was so proud of her! Anyway the music is filled with urgency, passion and vibrancy. It is a modern piece with a very Spanish flamenco flavor. The images that come to mind were wild eyed gypsy women dancing in a very passionate and sexy way. And that is pretty much what their dance looked like. So I thought I would use this piece for my Found Art inspiration. You think I could get my hands on a copy of it? Naturally not when I was ready to sit down and create. So I left that music behind. But the images of Spain were still with me.

In 1992, my husband and I traveled through Spain. We began in Madrid and headed south through many memorable areas over a 15 day period. Those images returned in a flood as I was mentally shelving the piece I described above. So I decided to pick out a song that reflected some of the images I held close. Spain is not only a country filled with passion, energy , and color but also great happiness, joy, and sunshine. So the song I chose is absolutely one of my favorite works and reflects, not so much the passion typified in Spain, but rather the joy and happiness seen on the faces of the Spanish (be it in Madrid, Ubeda, Granada, Sevilla, Toledo...well, you get the idea). This work is by Antonio Ruiz Pipo'. It is called Cancion and Danza Numero Uno. I believe he wrote it in1933. It is a guitar work that absolutely embodies the joy I felt each day I spent in Spain.

My work is entitle Cancion por Espana (Song for Spain). I used a postcard, trimmed to 4 by 4 inches, and altered the surface using gesso. The initial background was artist tissue paper, bled and the dye was allowed to run in various directions on the substrate. The color palette I chose were those that I felt as I listened to this music; reds, yellows, some blue. Acrylic paint was used as well to enhance some of the tissue dye colors. Then I added some interesting clippings of colors from magazines. The work just seem to evolve as I was listening to the music. And I ended up with an abstract collage. Really a first for me.

I am thinking that I may do a series of my impressions from Spain in a 4 inch by 4 inch format. So I am not sure if I will put this work out for someone to find. Maybe 2 more works.... I have a variety of music from Spanish composers which reflect the moods, emotions, colors of the their world. So thanks to this little experiment...I may just have to interpret those :)

Thanks again Rosa for a great idea. It was a wonderful exercise and one I would recommend to anyone who feels in a rut. Let the music speak to you.

Found Art Location for 11-7-06

After I picked up the children yesterday and dropped them at various activities and helped with home work (each child had 3 tests to study for,that would make a total of 9), I hit Panera Bread for a latte! I just wish it had something stronger in it! I left my flower work underneath (near the top) a stack of napkins in plain site (if you pick up a napkin). I could not stay because I had other things to do, like collapse on my sofa! Anyway. The kids have today and tomorrow off from school so we are working on some social study projects (creating Egyptian artifacts) and a family tree done in Spanish. Anything where we get to create is just great and these projects are right up my alley!
Looking forward to the next found art topic and getting some deco pages done!

Found Art Tuesday Topic for 11-7-06: Flower

Well I am really late on this one. I had no time from Friday up until about 2 PM today to work on any kind of art. I literally put this together in 15 minutes and it looks like it! It had been a while since I played with artist tissue paper, the kind that bleeds, and so this work incorporated tissue paper both into the background colors and main image. I topped off the piece with a variety of rubber stamped images. The piece is about 3 by 5 inches and is on a heavy glossy cardstock. I forgot how much fun it is to work with this type of tissue. So I think I will use it for the next couple of things that I do just to re-familiarize myself with it. As far as where I will leave this? Not sure yet but I will get it out tomorrow in my runnings around.

Found Art Location for 10-31-06

So just where would I leave La Bruja? As I posted yesterday, I thought about putting it into a trick or treater bag. By the time I finished my entry yesterday, I had decided the tick or treat bag would not work because there was too much risk it would be thrown out by the child before it ever reached home. I had a hair cut appointment today and thought that the studio might be a good place to leave La Bruja. Abbey Road Studio is located in Crystal Lake. It is one of several small stylist businesses that share a beautiful building. When you enter, there is a reception area with a nice long table. I laid the work on the table with a hand written note that said Happy Halloween. Of course on the back of La Bruja, there is info about found art, my blog site and a cute little poem. It took about an hour to get one fab hair cut and the work was still there when I left. Hopefully someone will get an extra nice treat today!

Found Art Topic 10-31-06

How fortunate that found art Tuesday is Halloween this year. One of my favorite holidays, I was hoping that Rosa would choose Halloween as a topic. Sure enough, logic prevailed and Halloween is our topic. One of my fascinations with Halloween is the lore. Witch stories were told to me when I was young and I remember being so frightened. The witch in Hansel and Gretel really kept me awake at night for some time. So I decided to conjure up my own witch for this weeks found art. I drew and painted this witch! I am trying to incorporate some of my own images along with the many found papers used in my collages. Found art topics allow me to practice my drawing without the intimidation. After all, no one knows me! This is a mixed media piece using found papers, inks, acrylics, and stickers. La bruja's warts are green brads. The witch, as mentioned, is my own creation. The substrate for this work is a mail post card (5 by 7 inches in size). I entitled this work La Bruja (witch in Spanish) and it is dedicated to my new found internet friendship with artist Rosa Murillo. Muchas Gracias Rosa, para la opportunidad found art!

10-24-06 Found Art Location

Today I had only one errand to run. I needed to pick up dog food and a few snacks for my pups. I purchase all my dog supplements, snacks , and food at a local store named Thomas Tails. It is in downtown Crystal Lake and specializes in holistic approaches to pet care. I love this store and am so grateful to have such a wonderful resource for my greyhounds. I must say they eat healthier than any of us. Anyway...I had my found art work, Secrets, in my pocket and decided to leave it in the store. I found a very obvious and safe place to perch the work. There was a wire shelf that contained dog food lids (to use on open cans of food so that they can be stored safely in the refrigerator) and I just slipped my Secrets in with the lids. I could easily see it from across the room. The store was very crowded but even with the work in plain sight, people just walked by without even noticing it. I finally had to leave or I would look too obvious. I will be returning on Thursday for a few items that I forgot and check out the wire shelf.

So another found art week has past. Maybe this time the finder will visit my blog!

Found Art Topic for 10-24-06

This week the topic is Secrets. Rosa gave some serious thought to this. I felt I had to meet her "challenge." When I started to really think about what my secrets are...well, lets say I am not ready to divulge any..even in an anonymous format. My secrets are locked away where only I can access them. So the work came together very fast after I realized that. I actually drew something! My heart! I think the rest is evident. The work is mixed media and I used acrylics, cut out words from various sources, inks, and black tape... all done on a coaster that I think I nabbed from an Olive Garden restaurant in Santa Fe, NM. I titled the work "Locked Away." As far as where I will leave this work ... I am still working on it. Stay tuned.

Found Art, Found at Starbucks 10-17-06

So today I left my altered coaster (see below) at a Starbucks in Crystal Lake, IL. I put it in front of the napkins in a napkin holder. Then I set myself down with a vanilla latte and waited. Starbucks always has traffic and so the likely hood that someone would see the art was pretty high. I watched as about 6 people walk right by the napkins (what is it about people and napkins...Doesn't anyone use them anymore, are people using their sleeves or what)? Then a young man, who I recognized as an employee, went straight to the napkins and picked up the work, read the back, smiled, and walked off. At least I know it was not trashed! Well, I hope this young man enjoys the work. I did get my smile. And that says something!

Found Art Tuesday: 10-17-06

This week topic, Coffee. How perfect considering I only have a bazillion coasters from Starbucks. So I grabbed a coaster to alter, laid down several acrylic washes, stamped images, and added a napkin from Starbucks as the background. Had one of my favorite Rembrandt images, his self-portrait, on hand and decided to use it. I am not sure if Rembrandt ever had a cup of coffee; but I bet this is how he would look on a Monday Morning if he was caffeine deprived (which is why I call the work "Monday Morning")! The coffee stains are real. Used a concentrated solution of freeze dried coffee to paint some areas and to make my coffee rings. So I will leave this at my favorite Starbucks in Crystal Lake, IL this Tuesday. Art for the week will include some deco pages and a collage for a friend.

Spooky Mood

Here is a deco page I finished a while back but saved until now to post. I had to be in that kind of spooky mood! My children and I just completed the finishing touches on our Halloween decorations and so in the spirit and mood....BOOOOOOOOOO!

This work is a mixed media collage. The moon is a magazine page that I altered with De-Solv-It product. You never know how this type of alteration will turn out but in this case..it was perfect for the moon. The trick or treat bag I made from a lunch bag. The substrate is 140lb cold pressed water color paper. A variety of acrylics were used as well as inks and stamps.

A Message for Robyn

I received a lovely message from Robyn in Dekalb the other day. I think the Found Art bug has bitten her. Robyn, this is really a lot of fun and I enjoy the challenge of making a piece very quickly to get it out there (so to speak) in just a short time. I usually begin my found art piece on Saturday, in between transporting my children to and from dance, homework, laundry, and such. If I get time, I finish up on Sunday. If not...I finish on Monday after I come home from work. I am hoping Found Art will catch on in our area. There is so much nastiness in our world, that I am sure a small piece of art, found unexpectedly, will elicit a smile. At least that is my hope. As far as the other art that I do, well, one day, I hope, to have more exposure. I know it takes time, but one day maybe....

Found Art Tuesday 10-10-06

My family and I went to a local Borders in Crystal Lake, IL last night. They have a coffee bar called Seattles Best Coffee and I left my work, "Feel The Warmth," just under the first couple of napkins in the napkin dispenser. It was obvious to the eye if you picked up a napkin. Then I settled in with a latte to watch. Well, I bet 20 people went to that self serve station (with the napkins and lids and such) and not one took a napkin! After about 40 minutes I was discouraged and then the waitress walked over to wipe down the self serve area. I thought for sure this was it...WRONG. Oh she wiped near the napkins but never even looked down! I gave up and left. So we shall see if who ever finds the work, emails me.

If you go to Rosa's journal, you will see that someone who found one of her works, did indeed email her. How exciting is that!

"Feel the Warmth" Fount Art for 10-10-06

This past week I was down and out with a stomach flu. I hate that. On Monday I was so wrought with fever that I could not even function. The kids all had major exams and I could not even hold a notebook to quiz them. My "poor" husband had to fill in for me. I was pretty much out of it for three days. I missed out on Found Art Tuesday too. Just did not feel like "art." Rosa posted a theme of "Home." I did manage to start it but did not finish. Maybe I will finish it this week and leave it somewhere anyway.

By Thursday I was feeling human again. I did a couple of deco pages and cleaned the house! On Friday my family and I went to see the King Tut exhibit at the Field Museum in Chicago. I came away with my own little treasures, a collection of artifact cards from various tombs, including Tut's. They should be fun to alter. This exhibit was absolutely fabulous. If you ever get a chance to see it, GO! The jewelry was incredible, as were the sculptures.

So that brings us to the theme for this upcoming week's Found Art, Sun. Now that I was feeling so much better, I actually felt like catching some rays. The Title of the work is "Feel the Warmth." It is a mixed media piece on a child's flash card. I just love altering things like that. Hand-dyed papers were used along with inks, and acrylics. I actually drew the main figure...and I don't draw, but Rosa's work convinced me I could do whatever I feel like...so why not experiment? This work is about the joy of sunshine, feeling the warmth of the sun's rays on my skin, savoring that warmth because it will soon be winter here in northern Illinois.. If I could actually catch those rays, what would I do with them?

Found Art Tuesday 9-26-06

I left my key themed piece at Le Petite Marche (Dawns Bread) today. I snuck it in between the napkins on the coffee bar. I was the only one in the bistro so I could not really hang around. So hopefully Dawn herself will find the work. She is such a nice lady. This week will be working on some more deco pages to meet swapping commitments :)

found art Tuesday 9/26/06

I can't believe how fast this one came together. I was finishing up a couple of deco pages and the idea just sort of announced itself as I was working. And so, while waiting for various items to dry, I started on this work for found art Tuesday. The theme is key.

This past Saturday I picked up a September menu from Le Petite Marche (Dawn's Bread). This little bistro is a well kept secret, tucked away in downtown Crystal lake, Illinois. They have a wonderful wine selection, cheeses from around the world, breads, and pastries to please the sweet tooth. I like the idea of using or altering a coaster, menu, or what ever I can pick up free from local establishments. In turn, I leave the finished art piece at that establishment for someone to find.

This collage uses a child's flash card as the base. The background paper is the menu I picked up from Dawn's Bread and I spent about 15 minutes looking for phrases in a travel magazine. Acrylics, inks, rubber stamps, found papers, and stickers, were used to complete the work.

I plan on leaving this at Dawn's Bread tomorrow (Tuesday). Dawn, the owner and chief chef, is a patron of the arts and I secretly hope she finds it :)

Found Art Tuesday on Saturday 9-23-06

I finally got to Chilis to leave my altered coaster found art piece. The topic was money and when you scroll down you can find the work. We have a fabulous waitress and so I was thrilled to leave the work for her in the payment folder. I hung around just long enough to see her pick up the folder. Unfortunately the place was so crowed that I could not see her actually open it and then my family was calling me to get moving! I have to admit this is down right addicting. This weeks topic is keys. I have a thought...now if only I can get the time to do the work! It seems like homework aid for my three children is taking up most of my evenings, work takes up my mornings, and my two greyt hounds take up my afternoons!

Found Art: Money Changes Everything.

Rosa announced the found art Tuesday topic this past Friday and it was Money. I decided to go for it again. I really enjoyed leaving a little piece of myself for someone to find so I guess I am officially bitten by the found art bug. While working on some deco pages, I completed this work today. I have a lot of cardboard coasters from various local eateries and bars and so I altered one from Chilis. Guess where I will leave it?

This piece is a mixed media collage on a 4 by 4 coaster. I used a variety of acrylic paints and media as well as rubber stamps, found papers (my kids play money from old games) and of course some bling. I usually have several projects out on my work table and it is so easy to add on a smaller work for found art Tuesday. Everything takes time to dry....so easy to work on several pieces at once.

I am not sure when I will be able to leave this at our local Chilis. I do not have the time to eat out on a week night so I may have to fudge a little on when I leave this. Possibly tomorrow, or maybe next Saturday night, but I am sure not this Tuesday.

ART FOUND!

I stopped in at the coffee shop where I left my found art piece last Tuesday. Lo and behold, it was gone! If I had to take bets, an employee probably found it because when I left the work, it was late in the day, right before they closed.

This weeks theme is money. If I have some extra time, I plan on giving it a go. My plan would be to create a work and leave it at a local restaurant, tucked inside my bill. Rosa mentioned on her journal that she thought this was an interesting experiment. I just hope those finding the works get a little pleasure from them!

Found Art Tuesday 9-12-06

I was so busy yesterday with being a taxi, homework, school curriculum night Mom, that I did not have time to post where I placed my little 4 by 6 postcard. After dropping my oldest off at the ballet studio, I stopped into a little cafe 4 stores down the street. Had a wonderful conversation with some old friends and then pretended to be looking at some fancy chocolate bars. I put the work in between the bars and purchased myself a latte and was on my way. I felt really good about leaving a little something to brighten someone's day. Rosa, I am looking forward to the next topic. :)

Found Art: First Work- "1995"

Opening my emails the other day, I received some information from Laura Lein-Svencner, the founder of the Midwest Collage Society. She was forwarding info from Rosa Murillo and her movement to leave a piece of found art somewhere in her community every week, Tuesdays to be exact. Found art is not a new idea and artists have been leaving little pieces of art in public places for people to find for sometime. Shari Vogt introduced the concept shortly after 9/11/01 in an effort to do something to bring smiles to peoples faces. If you want to read more about the Found Art Organization ... www.foundart.org.

I have not decided if I will join but I am thinking about it. For now I think I will try to work with Rosa's group and leave art around my community, maybe two times per month. Rosa's website if: www.rosamurillo.com

Here is my first piece. I used an old post card and altered it with found papers and acrylic. I am going to leave it at a little coffee shop near the train station in Crystal Lake Illinois. A Delicate Balance for Sure!

Just a few posts ago, I described a monthly exploration that is common place on the Yahoo Group Art Explorations. In that exploration we made some ATC backgrounds using a technique that was described on the site. A swap was set up in which we sent 3 ATC size pieces from our background sheets to a given person. The person on the receiving end then created an ATC from one of those background cards and sent it back to the originator. The ATC sized backgrounds I received were created with a gloss type medium, acrylic paints, and bubble wrap. The artist made the backgrounds extremely textured and very glossy. I chose a yellow and green card for the work. Because it was very textured, I had the choice to either sand it down in order to use rubber stamps in my design or do a collage. I decided to leave the texture and work with it. The look of the background screamed something to do with nature to me. I found this incredible tortoise and the rest fell into place. The color and gloss look was a bit too much for what I had in mind so I toned down the color with a buff colored acrylic and added raw umber highlights. I used Golden's soft gel matte medium to adhere collage elements. Talbot's method would not have worked because of the uneven surface.

I chose the little glass fairy to represent how fragile the balance is between preserving these wonderful creatures and sending them into extinction with our never ending need for more sprawl. I really loved the textured background on this piece as it mimics the tortoise shell.

Recycled Art ?

Not much art was accomplished this month. August was just so strange. We had a death in our family, moved my father-in-law from Santa Fe to our neck of the woods, the kids were home and finished with all their summer camps, and we did all the get ready for school stuff. With all that going on, I did get some time yesterday to do a deco page or two and I just had to post this page. It is not much to look at but I had such a chuckle over the theme. Basically I had to create a page using items that were meant for the trash. Since I very rarely throw out anything, because I just may need it one day, I not only had a good laugh but a hard time trying to find something to use. I even went through my two trash containers in my studio...Not much there except for used tissues (of the blow your nose variety) and a rotten apple core. The best I could come up with was an old magazine reviewing wines and a wine closure (which were in a pile of long forgotten items). So here it is. This is a pure collage, using Talbot's methods, nothing fancy. Since I was not too inspired this month, I was glad to have something to work on that brought a smile to my face.

August Exploration Results: 3 ATCs

I used the papers made in the previous post for some ATCs. The small works were completed pretty darn fast because the backgrounds sort of spoke to me. I knew that the paper painted with shades of reds would be used for one ATC with a Mexico/Frida theme. I primarily used rubber stamps and permanent inks to create the art. The second ATC is collage done with Talbot's methods. There is one image that came from a rubber stamp. The third ATC was created from the paper with shades of blues. I chose rubber stamps again and a die-cut thingie. The ATCs are for a swap that I have due at the end of this month so this exploration was timely for me.

August Monthly Exploration

Yahoo has a huge variety of Art groups to explore and learn from. I used to be a member of a good 40 or so but have cut that number to just a handful and currently, I am very, very careful about what groups I join. There is a variety of reasons for this caution, some of which are censorship, an inordinate amount of rules, egos, or just plain nastiness. Because there are so many art related groups, I still join new ones but I give myself a trial period, deciding at a later time whether or not there can be a mutual benefit. One such new group that I joined is called Art Explorations :
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/artexplorations/. I joined this group at a tumulous time, one of ownership change. Change has never been an issue with me, change can be good. The new owner seems to have a clear idea of where this group will head and so at least for now, I am happy to check out all the fun things going on.

One fun exercise is called the Monthly Exploration. If I understand the concept correctly, a technique or theme is voted upon, a member shares instructions, and then we create whatever the explortation is and share with the group. The exploration for August is ATC backgrounds. The instructions for this particular background technique were clear and concise with a tutorial and pictures. Since I have an ATC swap due at the end of August (with another group), I decided to complete the exercise.

Large sheets, 8 1/2 by 11, of either heavy weight cardstock or watercolor paper served as substrates for the backgrounds. Our instructions were basically to mix acrylic paints with a acrylic medium such a a soft get, coat the surface of the substrate and then to create texture, use a paper towel and or plastic wrap. One can find the full instructions to this technique by joining Art Explorations. The two samples here are my finished papers. While I am not new to this technique, it was nice to have two new papers ready to go for my ATCs.

The red toned page was made using 80lb burgundy card stock and I included a swatch of the original paper. This paper would not be my choice for this technique because it does not hold up well to the layers of acrylics, water, etc.. I rarely follow instructions but here is what I did: The card stock was first coated (using a brush) with a mixture of Goldens tit. white mixed with glazing liquid. I used the Goldens glazing liquid to give more body to my paint so that when I added texture using plastic wrap or paper towel, it would hold the patterns better. After that dried, I applied yellow ochre mixed with glazing liquid followed by plastic wrap and paper towel. After that dried I used Quinacridone crimson/glazing liquid followed by the same texture effects. Finally I toned down the colors using a wash of gesso. Before the gesso dried, I patted with paper towel. The texture is visual which is what I was looking for. This will make it easy to stamp on as well as collage. I can go either way.

The second page, done in a variety of green and blues, was done on 140 lb water color paper (Arches), which is by far a better choice for this background technique. Using glazing liquid as above, I made mixtures of Cerulean Blue Deep ( applied to the paper with a brush and texturized), cobalt turquoise, chromium oxide green, cadmium yellow medium plus white, and the final glaze was watered down gesso. After each color was texturized it was dried before applying the next. The watercolor paper does not buckle and is very sturdy. I did use some plastic bubble wrap to give texture as well. I will use a variety of items to add interest to my backgrounds. Some of these include magic mesh, screenig, cheese cloth, and wax paper. In addition, I have done similar backgrounds using matte board as a substrate and 300 lb watercolor paper. These are more typical for my work as of late. For ATCs though, 140 lb watercolor paper is more than sufficient.

Next I will cut each page into ATC size "cards" and make my ATCs. These backgrounds can be enhanced when the art work is underway, or left to stand on its own. ATCs soon to follow.
